Thinking of accepting job opportunity in Albany, GA, but all the threads read on Albany, GA are scary...

I am a middle age single executive who is seriously considering the job offer made, but now I don't know. Can someone give me sound advice on relocating to Georgia?

Try Hidden Lakes or stonebridge (a golf community) both are very nice and upscale and down the street from each other. They are outside the city limits down gillionville road. I hope this helps...

You could move to Lake Blackshear and it would be a decent commute. Very upscale homes there.

I have been in Albany since 1997. It is very segregated and lacks a sense of community. There was white flight from Dougherty County to Lee County just to the north when they integrated schools. If you are unfortunate to live in Dougherty County and have a family, then public schools are going to be a problem. If you can afford 10K per child to go to Deerfield Windsor (private school) then you will be OK. Most people can't however. There is a fairly large homeschool network because of this. We have never really landed on finding a good church home. Thats been pretty hard but I guess some adjust much easier. Since Albany is off the interstate, I think its overlooked by the politicians in Atlanta and large businesses have closed shop including Merck and Cooper Tire. Nothing on the horizon regarding the economy - its bad. High end homes aren't selling because good paying jobs are limited. If you buy in the Doublegate, Callaway Lakes or Hidden Lakes area I would caution you to evaluate the re-sale potential if for some reason the job does not work out. Albany is not that great a place for young professionals. No night life and not much to do. There's generational poverty and constant news of crime. If you live in NW Albany and and outlying communities you will be better off. Alot of people live in Lee County where schools are better and resale of homes is better. This may be an over-generalization but I would say that there is a welfare mentality with the city govt and many of its citiizens. There's been attempts to do something about downtown but its been a real struggle without outside investment. More restaurants, hotels and shopping outlets have popped up, along with a newer movie theater. I really don't know how the hotel industry in Albany is making it. I suspect there may be a few that go out of business. Property taxes doubled on me 2 years ago and seeing no improvement in schools or local projects. Definitely a good ol boy network around here. Dont see anything to draw kids back if they go to college elsewhere. Yes, there are lots of nice folks and its much more laidback than other places Ive lived. You just have to weigh all the options. Hope this helps.

Default Thank You Note

Dear Brady Bunch:

Thank you for the input. I have been told that the Princeton Apartments on 539 North Westover Ave. Is ok, nice, clean and close to churches, malls, restaurants, grocery stores, airport, vet, etc. I have a toy poodle.

Since the job offer is a two year development position, thought i just might rent a furnished apartment and take a two year car lease.

Still haven't decided.
