I think housing some of ASU's departments would be a huge boost for the downtown and give the area a true college town feel. I hope the proposal can be pulled off...

The merging of Albany State University and Darton Sate College was a leading issue for local officials and Georgia state representatives.

The leaders discussed the possibility of adding a campus downtown during a meeting Monday.

According to Georgia State Representative Darrel Ealum, the campus would likely be housed in the building that will soon be vacated by Water, Gas and Light.

"I mean, there are any number of things there that we could have in the center," said Representative Ealum. "We could create an economic engine downtown, put students on the ground downtown, bring industry downtown," he added.

Representative Ealum said the campus would be great for the university system and also great for the city.

He said he doesn't know exactly when WG&I will be vacated but that there is a process in place to relocate the office.

This is an excellent idea! Albany's downtown would certainly benefit from this.

Exactly, I've always wondered why ASU never developed a presence in downtown Albany. Looking at my hometown of Columbus, CSU has done wonders for bringing street life activity to Uptown Columbus.

Combined with the developments you posted in your other Albany thread, downtown 'Bany is really making a striking comeback. I grew up about 30 miles from Albany in the 60s and 70s. When we would go shopping or out to eat, we always went to Albany. The downtown was thriving back then, but really deteriorated over the next few decades. I'm glad to see it turning around.
