I am moving to the athens area. I don't know the area at all. ANY ideas where to find a reasonable place to rent? I have a child so I know I don't want clark county. I would like oglethorpe count.. elberton maybe... approx 45 minutes from the university would be nice.

Why not Oconee County or Madison County?? What's wrong with Clarke County? It's a great place to live with kids..the schools overall are just fine

From my research, it looks like Barrow Elementary and Timothy Elementary are very good. Both are in Athens. In Oconee Cty, which is very close, you have higher rated public schools.

Timothy is a very good school.. and if you live in Athens I would suggest the Timothy Rd area or 5 points.

Elbert County has very reasonable rents, but you may want to compare school report cards, before making a choice. The Main Street News is the local newspaper for Madison County which also has alot of rentals. You will find some rentals for Oglethorpe County in The Athens Banner Herald, but their local newspapper is not available online. Best wishes!

If you want cosmopolitan, try the Five Points area (expensive). If you like rural, try Oconee County. If you're gonna live in GA, you have picked the best of all possible locations in the State - the Athens area.

I agree.. Athens is by far the best city to live in Georgia outside of metro Atlanta.. in many ways though I think it is better than metro Atlanta. Athens has a great lively downtown.. and big city Culture in a small package. If you need anything in Atlanta.. it's only an hour away. Unlike other cities its size in Georgia.. Athens has a more cosmopolitan feel to it (due to its association with UGA and all of the people it attracts to the area)... Athens reminds me of a smaller version of Austin, TX.

I lived in Oconee County.. LOVED the elementary and middle schools!! (didn't have one attending high school- and this was prior to N. Oconee High opened)... Other than that, I know the schools in Jefferson are great, and Barrow is getting better. I, myself, wouldn't have put my kids in the Clarke Co. school system. There is too much going on in that area.. I worked at the Jail as a Correctional Nurse. Nope, wouldn't move onto that side of town!

I thought you hated the Oconee schools. Maybe I read another post incorrectly.
