I am currently a Yoga Teacher in NY looking to relocate with family to GA to open my own studio. Money is not an issue. Possibly Alpharetta or surrounding areas. I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on how well a Yoga Studio would do in any of these areas and if there is a big need for something like this. I have searched through all the forums and found next to nothing regarding Yoga, Health, Fitness, Etc. I'm starting to worry how health and alternative medicine is viewed there. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

I would think a look in the online yellow pages for Atlanta would give you an idea of how many yoga and fitness places there are in Altanta and the metro area. I suspect there are ton of them. Heck I went looking for bellydancing places and found some in Atlanta, so I'm sure there are several yoga places and lots of regular fitness places that have yoga classes.

Not a problem in Alpharatta or John's Creek (split from Alpharata last year). I wasn't pay attention to Yoga but I know karate school seems to be in every other corner. A lot of northern transplants in Alpharatta, John's Creek area.

I guess I am really trying to find out if there are certain areas that are known for being more health conscious or health oriented? Where I am now Yoga studios are as common as Starbucks. There is one on every corner and there is a need for that because of the demand in some areas. So does anyone live near or has had any experience with areas in GA that really seem to cater to the health conscious?

There are four Trader's Joe and multiple Whole's Food stores in Atlanta MSA. Trader's Joe located in midtown/Buckhead, West Norcross/John's Creek, Roswell and East Cobb. Whole's Food located in midtown/Buckhead, Roswell, John's Creek. So my guess is that those places are good place to start.

Thanks so much for your replies...
We have a ton of Trader Joes and Whole Foods where I am now on Long Island/NY and that doesn't always mean healthy people follow. They tend to put them where there will be a lot of traffic.
I am used to having a ton of bike trails and hiking trails and places for outdoor activities and I can't seem to get feedback on that. Due to medical necessity we need warm weather so going South is really ideal. I really don't want to be in the mountains and I'm trying to stay near Alpharetta or south of it. And again money is no object. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

So should that lead me to beleive that out of the huge state of Georgia, 9 million+ people that the city of Atlanta is the most health conscious of them all? That seems hard for me to believe.

I can only tell you that I have never seen so many big (you get my meaning) people until I came to Georgia over 2 years ago. I live in Forsyth County and there is a wonderful YMCA nearby.....it offers yoga classes among others.

They realease a study every year with the ranking the states by how fat their residents are. I think it is done by how many are obese. Georgia is ranked #12 and 7 or 8 of the top 10 (depending on how you classify them) are in the south. My theory is that Atlanta is the reason why Georgia is ranked higher. Check it out:
