I am a African American singlemother/LPN, trying to relocate from Rochester, NY to GA. Only thing is I don't know anyone down there. Can someone help me. I am considering St. Mary's, Columbus, Savannah, and last resort Atlanta. I'm interested in the crime rate, weather, best elementary/middle/high schools. Affordable apartments and nursing homes to make a decent living. Can someone please help me. I will be relocating in March 08, and taking some frequent 2-3 day trips btween Aug/Sept,
Thanks,
Worried--from the ROC.

Rochester to Savannah - wow, the change in weather is going to be a shock.
I hope you realize that Columbus is #3 and Savannah is #4 in violent crime, after Atlanta - in first place, as usual.

Now, the good news is, due to the influx of retirees from Fla, NY, etc. the N. Ga. area is growing rapidly, and new hospitals and health-care facilities are being built all over. Crime rate is low, schools pretty good to great, and we get 4 seasons instead of 2 - with just enough snow to see but not enough to shovel. If I were in health care, I'd take a look at towns north of Atlanta.

Where do we get this snow? I've been in Atlanta two years and haven't seen it yet. My uncle has been in Atlanta 12 years and has seen it once. I guess if you go to the mountains you might see a little.

You only have to go north 50 miles or so before you get 'a little' snow 2-3 times each winter. Every 10-12 years you get enough to be a real pain.
Knee deep drifts maybe twice in the past 20 years here.

But the worst snow I've seen was in Atlanta. Snow, ice, then more snow.
All roads closed, only MARTA trains running, and the ONLY time I've seen anyone commuting to work on skis. (really!)
