when VSU has home football games? I realize this is somewhat subjective, but since we are considering moving to neighborhoods around Valdosta State I thought it might be worth getting some opinions. Thanks.

If it is anything like it was when a relative of mine was in college there a few years ago, the answer is no . Traffic for College football games around the college was not an issue.
In Valdosta, the football crowds you will see - are for the local high schools, espeicially Valdosta High School.( At least that is how it was a few years ago )

Have you lost your mind? Valdosta traffic woes are not in the least due to football games, college nor high school. It is the lights that cause it. Some of them are abnormally long, while others do not even give a cell phone nut time to text a paragraph, lol. Especially in the north end of V-town. A few lights, namely Northside crossing Bemiss Rd or Forrest Street can put someone in a mood to murder on viciously hot days, if they are someone who cannot afford to blow gas by having their AC on all the time.
