So if the "In God We Trust" thing wins does that mean you have to have it on your license plate whether you want it or not?

My Minnesota plate is still on the front of my car. I installed it back in 1996 when I purchased the car, and it's still quite clean after eight years up there and almost seven down here. That's 15 years.

I don't think the area of the country impacts license plates all that much, assuming they were well made to begin with, and especially since the plates used down here are only on the rear of the vehicle, not both front and rear like many other states. The front plate takes a larger beating, gets hit with salt, etc.

It's an optional sticker you can purchase for $1.

Number 4 is the design I like. I feel that it would look best on automobiles. I don't like landscape tags because you really can't make out what it is unless very close to the vehicle. Secondly, the farming designs are not exactly accurate, considering that Georgia has much more forest land than agricultural land.

Number 2 & 8 are also fine, but I still go with number 4. Numbers 3, 5, & 6 would clash too much and would not look nice on the road, despite looking nice up close and on a computer screen.

For those of you who claim that we haven't had a change since 1998, you're not correct. Here's a little history leading up to that, and beyond.

In 1990, Georgia got rid of the famed white background with green letters "19 Georgia 83" tag, issued in 1983. They replaced it with a license plate with boldened, almost calligraphic letters, in which a peach took the place of an "o". On the bottom was a peachy orange color that faded to mid-plate.

1983 issue

1990 issue

The above plate was issued from 1990-1996. In 1997, the "Georgia on my Mind" plate was issued. It was the plate from 1997-2003. Some of you think that it was 1998 because the state changed from a sticker indicating the date you renewed your registration to one indicating when your registration was due. Hence, those who purchased this new plate in 1997 had to have it renewed in 1998, as indicated in the picture below. If you still have your car from that time period, you still have this plate, though the percentage of vehicles with this design is now probably only about 8% of all vehicles.

1997 issue

In 2004, the state issued another design, though it still maintained many similar design features. However, it was a different design. This plate was issued from 2004 to 2006. Dropped was the "Georgia on my mind" motto in favor of "www. Georgia. gov", and a grayish green haze was placed at the top of the plate. Roughly 25% of vehicles have this design.

2004 issue

In 2007, the above plate was modified, which while a slightly different design, was more or less the same license plate. The grayish green haze was removed, as was the www. Furthermore, the bubble white letter were removed in favor of slimmer black solid letters. This is the currently issued plate. Roughly 55% of vehicles have this design.

Leave the .gov out of it, sick of that. Enough government in our lives we do not need to be reminded every time we look at a freaking tag.

Do you notice how closely the designs are from 1998 to present? They're minimal, therefore, I wouldn't exactly count them as overhauls. Also, they never phased any of those plates out as they will with this new update. (most of which was mentioned in your post)

Gawd, these plates are butt ugly! Even In God We Trust cannot improve them. Why can't we have a simple-is-better plate???
