Brunswick, the fastest growing port on the Eastern Seaboard. I was surprised to find that its' MSA was now around 100,000.

Population growth rate: 20.77%


The port is mainly in the automobile business. This might sound bad since the US auto industry is so weak, but it has several redeeming qualities. It gives GA Ports a diversity of cargo. East Coast auto ports are export-oriented, meaning that they take advantage of the rapidly growing demand for American-made cars in the Middle East and Africa. Also, auto ports usually have a certain amount of processing work done at the facility (such as spoilers, rims, stereos, undercoating, etc), which creates jobs both in the surrounding area and throughout the state.

Brunswick has a really good position for the automobile market: it has great access to Atlanta's market as well as Florida's. Florida isn't a big enough market to warrant a separate port of entry for some manufacturers: many car companies only have 1 or 2 ports of entry on each coast. Brunswick is really the obvious choice for a southern Atlantic terminal, as you're smack in the middle of the market consisting of the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida. If you go much further north or south and you get too far for trucks to efficiently deliver the cars in a day's drive.

Jacksonville is its main competitor.

Jacksonville has been losing market share to Brunswick for years due to the fact that there is a higher amount of pollution in Jacksonville and the manufacturers want to avoid the residue that settles on the cars.
