I am thinking about moving to GA with 2 black teenage young men. I am fully aware that Atlanta is not a good choice for them due to violence and gangs and etc. What about Athens, Rome, Decatur, Smyrna, Fayetteville, Greensboro?
Are there good jobs in these areas? Are the schools good? Housing good?

Default What are you looking for?

I grew up in Americus Ga and Waycross Ga. Both are great. Both have gangs, drugs, and trouble for black and white kids. Both have great programs and extra curricular activities that will keep kids around other like minded kids and give them oppertunities to grow.

Smyrna is an Atlanta suburb just outside the I-285 perimeter, and it's not a bad place to live. I've lived just south of it in Mableton for six years, and I like the general area. The schools are part of the Cobb County system, which is usually considered to be very good, but I'm not sure how good Campbell High is or what other high schools might cater to the City of Smyrna.

You'd have better luck asking about Decatur and Smyrna in the Atlanta forum, I suspect.

Thank You for the replies. I have been looking into Smyrna as well and will be visiting in May to check out the surrounding cities. Thank You all again.

Don't move without a job. Our unemployment is high enough. We don't need to add to it.

Athens is NOT what you want for your teens. Trust me. We have 2 high schools with drop out rates that hover around 50% plus/minus. Majority of the students and dropouts are African-American. Grim.

Smyrna is a nice area. Diverse, easily accessible, many housing options and the City of Smyrna offers many amenties. The only HS I would recommend there is Campbell. It has a nationally acclaimed IB magnet program. Stay away from South Cobb High, Osborne and Pebbelbrook. Historically the "best" schools are North and East of Smyrna inside Cobb County.

Smyrna s not as safe then what the people are saying up top is a lot of gang violence and crime their mostly in east side of smyrna you'll also run into a lot of ghettos in the east side. I'm not saying there no good areas there us quite a few. But schools are not as good either campbell and osborne are the worse. The race demography is an majurity of blacks and hispanics too.
