One other thing that has to change is the attitude held by some people in this country, from Main St to the US Capitol building, that being an illegal alien is no big deal. This attitude that people who break the law with what they characterize as good intent should be excused and are not as guilty of a criminal act as someone who robs a bank.

In fact, if I rob a bank because I need the money and plan to buy food and other things for my family with the stolen money, does that make it OK?

So neil, what's a good punishment for the e-leeguls?
Not the ones that rob banks, just the ones that come here to take a job working for someone at substandard wages and conditions?

What is an "e-leegul?" Is that supposed to imitate the southern accent that I don't have? Or maybe that's meant to shift focus to the people pointing out the problem?

My response is that we should do the same thing that Mexico does to people who violate their sovereignty. No foreign citizen has a right to unilaterally decide that they now want to come live in the US. We as the United States get to decide who is allowed to immigrate here and under what circumstances.

Perhaps the focus should be on why people feel the need to leave their own countries and why the cannot make a living in their own countries. Even having said that, the US does not bear a responsibility to make up for the weaknesses and poor living conditions in other countries.

So...to answer your question, I would preface that I am the son of an immigrant and the grandson of immigrants. My mother is a naturalized US citizen. She waited in line and did all the boring stuff necessary to come here and enjoy the benefits of this country. Anyone who feels that process is too cumbersome for them or isn't to their liking should be deported. We should crack down on businesses who hire illegals and put the principals in prison if their company violates the law. It should become unacceptable to employ or harbor illegals. It should be unacceptable for people to break the law, no matter what their reasons.
