I am planning to take a 3 day trip to Atlanta soon. I'd like to stay north of the city and see some scenery/historical stuff. Must be near excellent shopping (wife and teenage daughter). I, being the taxi driver, would like: a safe area, avoiding as much traffic as possible, with some place for a boring conservative guy to kill some time while the women empty the malls. Motel/hotel suggestions appreciated as well. And please, I've done Buckhead and my head is still spinning; I was hoping to get a little more of the local flavor. Thanks.

Drop the ladies off in Buckhead while you spend the day two hours away in Dahlonega!

"avoiding traffic" and "excellent shopping" with "local flavor" and "historical stuff". These things are mutually exclusive.

Thanks, but I'd like to be a little closer to them in case of an accident, and also; I don't want to have to drive to Buckhead. Fighting that traffic just ain't worth it. They'll have to settle for something a tad bit less intense.

You perfectly described the Kennesaw area. That'll be Barrett Parkway exit on I-75 in NW Atlanta. It's got EXCELLENT shopping and you'll like the historical areas of Kennesaw Mtn. National Battlefield. Redtop Mtn. State Park is also very close as well.

That area of Atl. does have it's fair share of traffic, but it's very safe and a great area once you get off the interstate.

I WAS tempted to mention Kennesaw, with the battlefields, but I had honestly never been into town, so I do not know about the shopping component of this trip. Will he have to get the girls into an "antique shopping mode" in Kennesaw, or is there a huge mall there?

I don't think he'd have to drop them off in downtown Kennesaw for shopping. The shopping I'm talking about is on both sides of I-75 at the Barrett Pkwy. Exit (exit 269). There are a ton of new open air malls and restaurants, as well as Town Center Mall. link to Town Center Mall

The Battlefields are very close. Here's some directions I found online:

Directions: Take I-75 to exit 269, Barrett Parkway. Go west on Barrett Parkway approximately two miles to Old Route 41 and take a left (look for a little brown sign on the right at that intersection pointing left to the Battlefield). Go 1.3 miles and turn right on Stilesboro Road, then a quick left into the visitor center parking lot.

BTW....Red Top Mtn. State Park is exit 285 and it's very close to the interstate, so it wouldn't be very far either.

Thanks for your information! Do you know if there is an Aéropostale and or an American Eagle in that area? The wife likes Dress Barn and Hallmark.

Ok, a variation on that....

The North Georgia outlet area is North of Atlanta and just south of Dahlonega, and if your wife/daughter are into shopping they'll go NUTS at this place. It's in Dawsonville, north of Alpharetta along GA400. Tons of outlet shops. Here's the web for it: North Georgia Premium Outlets

You could drop them off there, and travel just a few miles north and you'd be in the crafts/arts village of Dahlonega. Small town square with local artist galleries, a gold museum, and more. When you're done drive south and be back at the outlet mall most likely before they're even done shopping.

If you find a place near there to stay, you can spend a second day hitting one of the animal preserves in that area. There are several rehab/natural habitat animal areas with all kinds of animals to see.

Here's one: Chestatee Wildlife Preserve with a variety of wildlife.

Another: Amicalola Deer Park by RainbowNation.org Near Amicalola Falls, Georgia

And to see the largest number of kangaroos outside of Australia (!) go here: Kangaroo Conservation Center

Gee, all of that without having to get NEAR Buckhead!
