Hello,

My husband and I along with our two small kids are relocating from very expensive Nassau County LI to Alpharetta. We both have jobs lined up, my job is in North Buckhead. We wondering if anyone had any experience with this type of move, and what the biggest challenges were making such a drastic move. Alpharetta seems nice and so do the people, but then again we have only been there on vacation/visiting.

Also I've heard traffic is a nightmare, I'm curious how long the commute would be to and from Buckhead. My commute to work now is 1 hour and 40 min door to door to NYC.

Thanks for your time.

Drive from Upper Alpharetta to Buckhead will be ~60 @ rush hour. There are 2 park/rides that go down to Marta @ northsprings, and you can subway into Buckhead. If you can adjust your hours to be off peek some would be around 45m driving.

Alpharetta is full of transplants, the school are great.

Thank you so much for the info. So accross from my office is a Marta Train Station @ the Lenox Mall stop, I guess I would just have to find the closest location to my home to catch it. (I guess that is what you mean by park/rides) Do you think that taking the public transit would be quicker, or just less hassle b/c you don't have to deal with the traffic. My hours will be 7am to 4:30pm.

Thanks again.

There is a park and ride at Mansell Rd you can use (bus) or North Springs (Marta Rail) Your am commute will be a breeze at that hour. Just avoid buying anything on a street with an elementary school. Those buses roll out before 6:30 am, and a lot of parents drive their kids to give them a little more time in the morning.

Coming back traffic, will be worse. The afternoon rush hour begins early, and 400 slows down between 4 and 5. Still, the hours you will be working are not as bad as 9-5.

I just made that move and Alpharetta is great but I truly miss the south shore and great neighborhoods of long island. not to mention the diversity. I have to agree that the schools seem great and there is no lack of amenities, shopping, movies, restaurants that we also had in nassau county. good luck with the move.

Thanks so much. We are from the South Shore also, we were in Long Beach, but are now in Oceanside. I know I'm going to miss the beach and boating around here so much. I think GA has lakes but it's just not the same. Anything else? Is it hard to make friends? Are the communities welcoming and friendly or everyone just sticks to themselves?

There are plenty of transplants here from the tri-state area, including my family. The hardest adjustment by far was the lack of proximity to the beaches. You won't have trouble making friends, at all.

Welcome, you will make a lot of friends in the Alpharetta area. Very-kid / family oriented area.
