Columbus makes a lot of sense because of the massive whitewater project downtown.

I'd say none.
For one, I don't think anything outside the metro area meets their target demographic. Two, the north georgia, e. tn and w.nc mountains offer much recreational opportunity. The rest of the state.... meh. If you were selling recreational equipment, you'd probably want to build a store in an area where a large number of people recreate. And not just anyone. People over with a certain income level. The people in the area have to be able to afford your merchandise.

Augusta already had REI coming to the Village at Riverwatch, and Gander Mountain at Wheeler Town Park before they were stalled during the recession... The Savannah River, Clarks Hills, Augusta Canal, Phinizy Swamp, Aqueduct Park, etc are here in Augusta...

I would expect to see one in Augusta now since the VAR and WTP are both moving forward..

Columbus is slated for a Gander Mountain. It is part of the expansion of Columbus Park.

Gander mountain caters to huntin', guns, and fishin.

REI does not cater to any of those things and therefore, REI'd be out of their minds to locate to colbs, macon, et al.
