When did Augusta ever had it going for its city population? NEVER! You can't compare Columbus city growth to Augusta's. Columbus will always win.

I just wish you all would stop bickering about 'this city > that city.' Can't a thread ever be started without all this meaningless fuss??? Geez...

Show me where Columbus has a leg up on Augusta GA? Im sure Columbus is a fine town but it has a ways to go to compete with Augusta and Savannah.

It looks like Augusta has the larger population. Lets change the subject for a second. The CSRA will become alot more connected with the River Watch Park Way Ext. connecting Columbia Co. to downtown AUG, Windsor Spring Rd Widening form South Augusta to Hephzibah GA and Hwy 56 widening connecting Augusta Richmond to Waynesboro Burke Co. No wonder Augusta has the second largest metro in the state.

Not really,Columbus gained 5k between 2010-2011(194,000+), While Augusta city pop declined! You do know the Columbus CSA (456,564+) only 100k behind Augusta's MSA ( 556,877)? The facts show that Augusta MSA have three counties over 100k,while Columbus CSA only have two.

Georgia (4 counties)
Burke County Pop: 23,316
Columbia County Pop: 124,053
McDuffie County Pop: 21,875
Richmond County Pop: 200,549

South Carolina (2 counties)
Aiken County Pop: 160,099
Edgefield County Pop: 26,985

Columbus metropolitan area, population 300,000.
Auburn–Opelika metropolitan area, population 135,883.
Tuskegee micropolitan area, population 21,789.

OK can we stop talking about population? Columbus population is larger the city of Savannah but Savannah makes Columbus look like 1800 settlement. Lets talk about the projects that the citizens of the two cities approved.

FALSE!!!!! I didn't want to get involved in the thread but had to point this out... This is like the third-fourth time somebody from Columbus gets on here and tells people Augusta is losing population. It's amazing you're using the 2010 populations for the metro Augusta area, but had the nerve to put Columbus at 300k... It's even worse you have to compare the MSA of Augusta vs the CSA of Columbus...

Neither the Census or Business Journal estimates show Columbus gained 5k people from 2010-2011..

2nd tier Georgia cities battling it out. At the end of the day they all lose out. Greenville and Columbia sc are lighyears ahead of Macon, Augusta, Columbia and Savannah in terms of diversity and vibrancy. Savannah has improved greatly in this area thanks to SCAD but the open minded, diverse cultural part of the city is pretty limited to downtown. There are even diverse churches in Columbia and Greenville.

Ok people, this thread was intended to show what potentially positive things may come about because of the approval of the SPLOST, not bash each other. The mayor of Columbus said something about a change in the face of the state. I think there will be a population shift more towards places like Columbus and Augusta, both are on rivers and border states.

Greenville is above the Augusta tier, but Columbia to tell you the truth is not much higher than Augusta, the only thing it has on Augusta is 3 interstates to Augusta's 1, a larger research university, which GHSU and ASU have formed, a mighty fine zoo which I have to say, and the title of state capital. If Augusta had 3 interstates and a slightly larger Airport it would trump Columbia.
