Lower GPA for HOPE approved by House

State Rep. Stacey Evans (D-Smyrna) said she was thrilled that the House voted in favor of her proposal to lower GPA requirements for those seeking HOPE grants to attend technical colleges.

Lowering it to a 2.0.

Seriously, what are we teaching our kids. Don't worry about working hard, we will still give it to you. I remember going to school. We had to WORK for good grades and EARN the opportunity for grants and scholarships.

Then I'm sure the parents will be so proud for the low grades but got free school. HOPE just needs to go now.

So the HOPE scholarship is already low on funds and having to cut the amount that's paid to each recipient, and they're expanding the pool of eligible students. That's just brilliant.......

Id really rather see nobody get it then lazy people get it. It must suck to be one of the 3.0-4.0 students who worked for it and to have the slackers just join them like this. Just like a union work!

You should mention it's HOPE grant and not HOPE scholarship. HOPE scholarship still requires a 3.0. They are probably trying to allure more students to attend Technical schools.

Great decision! You have Technical and University colleges in the state that allows students with a 2.0 to attend their schools.

^^^^ It's a bad decision. A 2.0 GPA is below average. Do you know what HOPE stands for? If not, look it up because a student with a 2.0 shouldn't qualify.

It is good for us simply because our state needs more people with a technical education and moderate wages to lure more high value companies to our region that demand different skill sets for different jobs.

It is designed to help those from average or less fortunate areas become better and more productive workers and not simply left w/o any futher education altogether.

It is typically a cheaper education, less time, and keep in mind.. these kids aren't exactly given a 4 year degree from UGA or Tech.. So we aren't exactly giving these people the exact same thing others worked harder for. We are giving them something much less valuable, but it still allows them to become more productive people.

As someone else mentioned... This is the Hope -GRANT- program and not the Hope Scholarship. That program is underbudget by far, because it is underused. Few people qualify for it that wouldn't have another scholarship or grant that makes them ineligible.

Also, the Hope Grant doesn't necessarily cover everything and it is limited to how many hours of course credit that is eligible for it.

The better way to read into this... We actually make the Hope available to many, but you have to work harder to get more and be in a better school. However, we make it accessible to people who moderate achievers and can do well for themselves (and the economy) in a cheaper, shorter technical program.
