Taxes in Atlanta are lower than some areas of PA, and probably comparable to others. If you could provide more info on where specifically your job will be, and what kind of price range you'd be looking in (as well as how many bedrooms, what amenities you'd like, etc), you should get some good info here.

Georgia does tax pensions. If you're over 62 or permanently disabled, there's a portion of income from pensions, etc., that is excluded from taxation, but I don't know what the amount is. The source I looked at said "refer to booklet for amount of exclusion", but I couldn't find the booklet they were referring to. So, the answer to your question is "yes", to some degree.

Union for what? There are construction unions, but they're nowhere near as strong as NJ or NY. There's not a teachers' union.

What trade are you interested in, and why does the presence or lack of a union have such a strong influence on your desire to move?

Thanks for the quick reply. Oh, well. I still think I will come out ahead due to the taxes up here.

Hey there Yankee! I moved to Cumming, Georgia, from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, a little over seven years ago. It was absolutely the best decision that I ever made.

The school taxes are so much cheaper here. I live in Forsyth County which has one of the cheapest taxes. My home is valued at $250,000, and my taxes are only $1200 a year. However, where I noticed the difference is in PA, we hardly paid for anything that our children needed (school supplies, band uniforms, etc.) That is where a lot of money starts to come in. But, what I love is that all the schools are new with state of the art equipment.

This place is so great that my parents are moving here in three weeks. They live in Montoursville, Pennsylvania, and are retired. Their property taxes are killing them. But they'll benefit from homestead exemption and very low taxes (about $200-$300 a year) because they are retired!

Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions. There are sooo many people here. Even our church pastor asked if there was anyone left in Pennsylvania because they have all moved south!

Good luck to you,
Michelle

My father in law lives in Oxford PA and the taxes on his (small) house are very high. I believe approaching $5500/year. The taxes in most, if not all, areas of the northern ATLANTA are substantially lower. (Oh, he hates PA taxes and is trying to sell his home to move to the South.)

Forsyth County seems to have very low property taxes....just like Michelle said. Gwinnett County, the county just east of Forsyth, has reasonable taxes. Just to give you an idea..I sold a $180k house in Buford GA (Gwinnett County) and the taxes were $1600/year. That $180k home was built in 1993, 4 bedroom/3bath on 1 acre in a nice subdivision. If you look in Fulton County, you will find taxes are probably the highest out of the ATL metro area.

Hope that answered your question. =)
Brian
