Hawkinsville
Population in 2012: 5,611 (93% urban, 7% rural). Population change since 2000: +71.1%

Byron
Population in 2012: 4,718 (96% urban, 4% rural). Population change since 2000: +63.4%

Perry
Population in 2012: 14,730 (89% urban, 11% rural). Population change since 2000: +53.4%

Warner Robins
Population in 2012: 70,712 (100% urban, 0% rural). Population change since 2000: +44.9%

not listed as official "cities"...Southern Bibb County, Northern Bibb County, Bonaire, and Kathleen

Very interesting situation going on. Macon is by far the true city of the area, with an actual downtown, historic district, several colleges, urban neighborhoods, etc. However, it cant be ignored that Houston County's population (146,136) is nearly the same as Bibb County's (156,462) and gaining ground quick. It's weird because at the current rate Houston Co. will pass Bibb Co. in the near future, but it will still be far more "suburban" than Bibb.

Before I read any of the replies, I was going to say that the Houston County cities are the only ones really booming in central Georgia. There has been some good growth in Monroe County (Forsyth), spillover from Macon I am sure. Milledgeville isn't booming per se, but seems to be doing OK. Other than that can't think of much.

I wouldn't say abandoned...

Families with school aged children, however either leave Bibb or pony up for private school and I don't blame them. That is the biggest reason Bibb is growing slowly and Houston is booming. I don't see that changing anytime soon as Bibb schools are generally deplorable and the community won't do what it needs to do to improve them.

Houston County is growing extremely fast. Monroe and Jones Counties are growing nicely as well. Northern Bibb County (adjacent to Monroe County) and Southern Bibb County (which is adjacent to Houston County/Warner Robins and Byron) are doing fine too.

Downtown is coming along.

Much of our "population decline" is people moving further out into the county...which still is really Macon (which will be official now with consolidation). Bibb County's had growth, VERY slow but growth.

midgeorgiaman is right though. Bibb County Public School System is a joke.

Thanks for these figures. Would have to look it up, but save for the Macon/Bibb consolidation, Warner Robins was poised (or already would have been) the largest city in central Georgia.....
