Of the 4, Columbus is the one with the greatest disadvantage interstate / geography wise and always has been. At one time it was the largest city in the nation not on an interstate highway, just a spur. I believe that distinction now belongs to Huntsville AL.

Actually Columbus is situated nicely between 3 state capitols, Atlanta, Montgomery, and Tallahassee. Hoping I-185 is extended to Tally one day.

@RiverDawg. Augusta has been GA's 2nd largest metro since GA MSAs were created. Augusta-North Augusta (Aiken joined later) became the official MSA and the second most populous in the state. Columbus-Ft. Benning-Phenix City was third-largest. Macon-Warner Robins became an MSA, and ranked fourth. The Savannah MSA was fifth and defined as Chatham County only (188,000 people in the 1960 Census and 187,000 in the 1970 census because three years after Hunter Air Force Base shut down, it hadn't been fully replaced yet by Hunter Army Airfield). Savannah didn't become 3rd largest MSA until 2000, after it gained Effingham and Bryan Counties, after Macon-Warner Robins was downgraded to two separate MSAs, and when Savannah passed Columbus in total MSA population.

Augusta has ranked as 2nd largest GA metro for the last 50 years. It became the state's second largest municipality in 1995 after Augusta-Richmond consolidation, but just dropped to third-largest in 2012 (after Columbus-Muscogee brushed by Augusta in total city population thanks to fallout from the BRAC the previous year).

I-20 west goes to Atlanta from Augusta and east I-20 goes to Columbia as well as leading to I-95....On the other hand, You can only go I-185 north to continue interstate access to Atlanta from Columbus....Augusta has better interstate access than Columbus...

Columbus city is 15,000 people larger than Huntsville so they hold the title although Metro Huntsville is bigger...

....and how being "situated nicely" between 3 capitols helped Columbus so far? I agree Columbus is geographically better off.

Columbus has better highway access than Augusta though. Can't forget about U.S 280 & 27 going straight through downtown Columbus.

As of 2013, Augusta's population exceeded 200,000, which again makes it the second largest in population.

Augusta's highways seem to get more traffic...
