We have two sons graduating from college in May. Son A's commencement is at UGA, Friday night at 7:00.
Son B graduates from GA Southern, at 9:00 the next morning.

We've experienced Athens gridlock after football games, and assume it will be just as bad after graduation, so we probably won't get far before 11:00pm. We have been told we need to be in Statesboro by 7:00 am, because the campus is likewise congested.

Our best option seems to be the approximate halfway point of Augusta, where we can sleep for at least a couple of hours. The prospect doesn't thrill us, since neither of us likes driving long distances at night, but I can't come up with a better option.

Am I overlooking a better idea?

Wow thats tuff! Why not drive the same night(even though it would be tough) and be in Statesboro around like 1am or 2am and get a couple of hours sleep and then be fresh by 9am?

To add to the complication of the weekend, we checked into reserving a room in Statesboro a month ago. We were too late, everywhere we tried was booked. There aren't a lot of decent options in town. Augusta seems the closest place with options, but I'm really not familiar with the route between the 2 cities.

That's what I figured. I was hoping to get a little closer to Statesboro, but it doesn't seem likely.

This is easy: Take US 441 South from Athens to Dublin. Two-hour drive. 110 miles. Plenty of hotel rooms. Get up early and drive I-16 to Statesboro. One hour drive. 70 miles.

Done.

(Just be sure and request a late checkin at whatever Dublin hotel you settle on. There are several very nice ones at the main Dublin exit on I-16)

I concur with this. Dublin is closer, much of 441 is 4 laned and the drive in on 16 will be a breeze until you get into town. Dublin's hotels are right on the highway too and when time is an issue that matters. Augusta is way out of the way.

Thank you Newsboy and midgeorgianman. That's the info I was seeking. I'd much rather be facing a one hour drive in the morning.

Either Dublin or if you can manage to drive an extra 45 minutes to Metter. It just depends on how much driving you're willing to do at night or in the morning.
