considering moving to GA, is the federal system the best option for self employed individuals or is there other options?

That is the only option you have, unless you work full time for a company which offers health insurance.

It's not the only option Yet... and from what I can tell EVERY other option is significantly cheaper (for me, roughly $4000/year cheaper). I'm with United One on a low cost, high deductible plan since I visit a Dr about once every 5~7 years for only a simple check-up and have a healthy emergency fund for, well, emergencies.

Depends on your age. My wife and I are in our 30's, with one child. We got a plan for around $730/month via. the federal healthcare exchange.

As gentlearts said, the federal exchange is your only option, since GA decided not to set up their own exchange.

You can get a quick estimate of what your insurance will cost by going to Kaiser Family Foundation's website.

As touchega pointed out, the Kaiser site will help you determine if you are able to get a discount or not or what the prices may be, as should the healthcare.gov site now that many of the kinks have been worked out (finally).

My healthcare plan through the site wound up being about $150 cheaper than it used to be, and it covers 80% instead of my older plan's 70%, with a lower deductible. For some it will be like that, others perhaps not. So research via those sites is your first step.

In the end, age seems to be a big, big factor when it comes to premiums. A couple who is 60+ years old, and in excellent health can pay $1,000+ for insurance.
