If the above is too much for one day, another outing down the aformentioned GA 60 to Dahlonega would be nice. North of town off of US 19 is the entrance to Camp Glisson, a Methodist retreat center, but in the center of the grounds are the wonderful Cane Creek Falls. A lovely chapel is nearby. The Smith House Restaurant in downtown Dahlonega is a must. The square is full of nice shops and the campus of the University of North Georgia is a nice place to visit as well.

From there a return to Blue Ridge going west from Dahlonega to Ellijay will take you right past Amicalola Falls, the other star waterfall in north Georgia. The state has built a beautiful lodge above on a ridge above the falls with a magnificent vista. The remainder of GA 52 to Ellijay will take you through the heart of Georgia apple country. This road is in more of an open valley than 60 and 348, not as windy and curvy, but beautiful country as well. From Ellijay, it is a short up back up the four-laned GA 515 to Blue Ridge.

Another interesting site not far from Blue Ridge would be the Ocoee Whitewater Center just west of Ducktown, TN on US 64/74. The twin towns of McCaysville, GA and Copper Hill, TN are just NW of Blue Ridge. These are interesting as they are some of the saddest towns in the entire area. When I was a child, the hills above Copper Hill were devoid of vegetation from the strip mining for copper. My last visit had seen much of the land reclaimed, but the scars of this era are still evident. The towns themselves are remnants of an old mountain town that the tourist industry has bypassed.

The Whitewater center is a magnificent structure built for the white water rafting events for the 96 Atlanta Olympic games. This would be a short trip from Blue Ridge if an all day outing isn't in the cards.

Blue Ridge, as a previous poster has mentioned, is not the highlight of the GA mountains by any means, but it is a good central location to visit many of the treasure of this area as well as a short drive to more sites in southwestern NC including the Smokeys and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Well, we arrived just in time for Georgia to declare a state of emergency hehe

On a drive in Blue Ridge, the snow started. By the time we got near home cars were being abandoned on the road as they couldn't get up the steep mountain slopes. Thankfully we made it back though.

Sights-wise we checked out Blue Ridge lake, Copperhill and Ellijay. I was on a mission to get up Brasstown Bald, but sadly the road was closed. Maybe another time!

Spring through fall are ideal times to go up to Brasstown bald .Save going there for those seasons . Also make sure of what ever vehicle you are driving there ,that the brakes are in excellent shape. That is not a place you want to have those kind of issues .The descent is really windy and steep .
