Hello. I couldn't fit, "&locals" into the title so... I need honest answers from native Californians residing in Georgia & locals please.
Firstly, I am a 25yrs. old. I'm a single parent and I'm moving to GA (Rex to be exact) with my 7yr. old son. We come from a multi-cultural family (blk, hisp.,asian & wht.) Initially we will be living with my close friends whom are also from Cali but have been in GA a little over a yr& in Rex about 2wks. I on the other hand have never left CA& although there is some excitement.... The main feeling is fear. No matter what, I'm moving-this will be my first attempt to be completely on my own (no family to fall back on). Some random Q's-tell me this:
*What is the area of Rex like?
*Why do Rex elementary schools have such low school ratings? (2,3)
*Im mixed, identify as black-is there anywhere I should refrain from going or any places I'll likely not be welcomed?
*I hear that women in GA are very aggressive-true? If so, why& how exactly?..& although I'm heterosexual, I'm told there's no point in inquiring about men bcuz 75%are on the D.L.-true?
*If your from CA-what are the blk people like? Ratchet like Oakland?
*The white people? Accepting or still racist?-I'm talking majority
*How difficult will it be to find a job @this point in time?-w/work experience (office & customers care) but w/o a degree..
*I'm sorry if I touch a nerve but.... HIV/AIDS. Why so many cases???
*Californians- hate it, love it or content?
*How are people from CA viewed/treated by natives?
*25& never left CA-Will it be culture shock?
Biggest problems, adjustments & advantages for Californians?
And... I think that's it for now. ~please touch on any subject you feel I should be informed of which I didn't list~
Thank you kindly

Since the Rex area is located within the Atlanta metropolitan area, you should move this post to the Atlanta Forum where you might have a much-better chance of getting some replies.

Otherwise, Rex is just a lower-middle class/working-class area on the often-overlooked predominantly lower-middle class south side of town below the I-20 freeway opposite the much-wealthier, much more powerful and much more popular Northside of the Atlanta metro area.

I hope the move has gone smoothly.
Venture out if Clayton county as it's not representative of the rest of metro Atlanta.
Come out to the Highlands, Five Points, Atlantic station and the area of the Aquarium.

Good luck.

This stuff about "fitting in" is not nearly as complicated as people make it seem. It's really this simple. If a person lives or hangs out in an area where there are enough people around who "look like them" then they are less likely to "stand out." This DOES NOT necessarily mean a person will be harassed if they are in an area where many of the people do not look like them, but there's just a greater chance of that happening.

With that said, California is 6% black and many of those blacks live in the same areas. Georgia is 30% black and live all over the state in large numbers except in the extreme North Georgia mountain towns.

So if you feel "accepted" in Cali, you certainly will in Georgia.
