The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transponder, or LGBT, civil rights organization, released its third annual report on Wednesday, assessing LGBT equality in 353 cities across the nation, including eight in Georgia.

The 2014 Municipal Equality Index (MEI), the only nationwide rating system of LGBT inclusion in municipal law and policy, shows that cities across the country, including in Georgia, continue to take the lead in supporting LGBT people and workers, even when states and the federal government have not.

The average score for cities in Georgia is 39 out of 100 points, the national average is 59. Georgia cities scored as follows:

Atlanta: 100/ Decatur: 46/ Athens: 46

Columbus: 21
Augusta: 10
Macon: 3
Savannah: 18

The MEI rates cities based on 47 criteria falling under the following six broad categories:

Non-discrimination laws
Relationship recognition
Municipality's employment policies, contracting non-discrimination requirements, and other policies relating to equal treatment of LGBT city employees
Inclusiveness of city services
Law enforcement
Municipal leadership on matters of equality

Definitely great news that speaks to the diversity of the Columbus region. I attribute a lot of this to the large number of transplants who have relocated to the area due to Fort Benning and our large corporate base. Good for Columbus!

Not really. Georgia average score is 39/100. I can see Columbus passing that within the next 3 or 4 years.

Sure it has a ways to go but it leads Georgia's other 2nd tier cities. That's what is important.

The article is titled Columbus listed low on LGBT Municipal Equality Index for Georgia, not Columbus has the highest LGBT Municipal Equality out of Georgia's second Tier cities.(I bolded that for a reason) Do you have to try to make every thread out of a competition between cities, when there is no need?

So now we're disputing facts? I understand that you probably hate to see growth in Columbus, but you will have to just deal with it.

Well duh; Georgia is a mostly rural Deep South state. The state average is a very, very low bar.

Lolol...well in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king I suppose. Again, that bar is set pretty low and that's what's "important" to you guys. Smh...
