Hi Everyone!
We are looking for some advice.
We are a 40's something married lesbian couple with a 13 year old son. We currently live in Santa Fe, NM. Moved here about 8 years ago. Santa Fe is nice, laid back, no issues with LGBTQ folks at all - very liberal. Unfortunately, several issues that collide with our personalities, lifestyle here. Very anti-social/clicky if you will. Lots of Lesbians here - I guess - if you can find them. Nothing for kids to do. Schools are the worst I have ever witnessed. (we had to bring in toilet paper, school ran out, no $ to buy anymore ) We home school him now. It is a art, music, alternative-cerebral creative-oriented town. Lots of wealthy with lots of immigrants from Mexico to work for them. Also, very, very, very expensive to live here. I am a nurse, wife a teacher and we live paycheck to paycheck. Not living high-end at all. Bought a "fixer-upper" house for $200,000. So if you are wealthy, artsy, no kids, and anti-social you would fit in perfect here in SF. Sorry to anyone from SF reading this, not trying to offend. Just not our thing.
We are seriously looking at relocation. Here is what we are looking for (flexible):
We are middle-class types, like community. Not busy-bees, just like to go to community events, parade, bowling or something.
Son would like some kids to hang out with things to do.
Schools need to be functional.
Home buying budget 150,000 - ish
Average job prospects. We also sell online so can work from home as an option.
Warmer weather - both grew up in PA and Western NY. Snow ok, but do not want several feet

We are looking at Decatur, GA is top in our list right now. All the info on threads/city-data are a few years old. Hoping someone who lives there now or recently can give us an update as to how Decatur is currently.

Thank you all for any guidance you can give! Greatly appreciated!

Given that it has an excellent small city school system and is likely the most liberal and tolerant community in what is otherwise and generally a very conservative state (in Georgia), Decatur would likely be an excellent choice for you and your family....If you and your family would not mind living in a state that is completely dominated by decidedly conservative/decisively right-leaning politics.

The biggest problem is that finding something for as low as $150k in the City of Decatur would most likely be completely out of the question in this recovering real estate market where housing prices continue to rebound towards (and beyond) the previous highs of the decade of the 2000s.

Unfortunately, if one is looking to find a place to live in a unique and popular city like Decatur (which is popular because it has a unique small urban village-like vibe) in this evolving real estate market, one would probably have to increase their homebuying budget to at least the $175k price range (but probably $200k and beyond) and be willing to settle for either a small condo/townhome and/or something that is substantially older.
