You're going to love Atlanta, but I wouldn't be so quick to look in that area. The traffic there is horrible, and it takes forever to get there from anywhere in the city. My best friend lives in John's Creek and it takes me over 45 minutes to get to her house and we're only 15 miles away. And that's in the middle of the day...not high traffic times. My suggestion in Gwinnett County. We live here with our 2 boys and love it. The schools are great (you just have to pick the right area), and we got a HUGE house and yard for our money. My suggestions are Lawrenceville (30043), Suwanee (30024), or Buford (30519). It is an easy commute to downtown on I-85 and there are 2 other feeder roads you can use if the traffic is bad. (Kind of like hopping on Supelveda if the 405 is busy). I lived in Manhattan Beach, Irvine, Santa Monica and Westwood in the 90s. The taxes are low (we pay about $2000 for the year), and the area has fabulous parks and recreation for the kids.
If you need a great realtor to help you look call Danthika Borst. She did a fabulous job for us and we recommend her to everyone who needs a realtor. She works for GMAC Metro Brokers in Buford and her number is 404-843-2500. Call her and she'll have everything ready when you arrive to look.
Hope this helps.
