You don't see the sprawl because you are comparing what once a small country town to Atlanta. Rural hardely nothing like the small rural towns up north. We were discussing how crowded its getting and how we cringe at every Cobb..DeKalb..Fulton Tag we see. I agree Ellie what once was a nice rural area people are becoming ruder. Holiday weekends the locals cant enjoy anymore. Please just stay south of Jasper nothing to see here.

I just sold 10 acres in northern ID last month, because it was getting overcrowded with Texans and Californian's. We just moved back to the GA mountains on land we've had since my childhood. My taxes are low, my retirement funds are not taxed and my license renewals are $20/yr.

I have retired and want to leave the craziness of south Florida. I am originally from Indiana, but after a several day visit up there this spring, I've decided that I would rather live somewhere between Florida and the colder, more polluted Midwest. Four years ago I drove up to the Smokies and was pleasantly surprised at the beauty of northern Georgia. It has been many years (40+) since I was in this area. OneDawg's comments just above mine, make me think hard about moving up to northern Georgia. I drove through Georgia on highway 441 which was a beautiful drive! Availability of doctors, a good hospital, convenience to grocery stores, etc. would be important to me. I can buy many other items online.

Contractors, I don't understand your complaints. Having grown up in rural South Georgia I can tell you that areas like Blue Ridge should appreciate the commerce and investment that non-locals bring to the area.

North Georgia mountains are not the Smokies. We are in fact the beginning or the foothills of the Appalachian. The availability of good Healthcare depends on what is wrong with you. We have to drive 25 miles to Gainesville for any kind of long term treatments (ie diabetes, heart, cancer, eyes etc).

If you're in Rabun county you may as well consider Asheville for its superior medical care.

Yes, I understand. I should have written that I passed through the mountainous area of northern Georgia on my way to visit the Smokies.
