Don't really know if a second one is needed, but with all the growth on SSI it might be needed sometime in the future...
Quote:
In addition to easing traffic woes on the island as it grows in population, the second causeway was touted as an added outlet in case of emergency evacuations. But emergency management officials noted that the Torras causeway served the islanders quite adequately during the last such emergency, the brush with Hurricane Floyd in 1999.
The 2001 push was not the first time officials have tried to build a second access point to the island. Torras himself was recruited by the county after World War II to oversee a “Scenic Loop Highway.” Torras built the original that bears his name in 1924.
The idea of a second island access was readdressed again in the 1960s, the ’70 and ‘80s.
And it will probably come up again at some point.
“Where else can you live like this on the Georgia coast?” Fendig said.
Any proposal to build a second route to the island would not get far on land, as in a solid embankment like the Torras. It would most certainly have to be a continuous bridge, Nagel said.
“They really aren’t looking at causeways anymore because it’s just too big of a footprint on the marsh,” she said. “It would have to be a raised structure, as in a bridge.”
State Sen. Jeff Jones, an island resident who represents the area, welcomes a new round of talks on a second route to the island.
“I think a second causeway is very much needed, and is certainly worth serious study,” he said. “It hasn’t come up that I’m aware of, but I’d like to hear a discussion about it.”
His counterpart on the island, Sen. Alex Atwood, R-1, said the issue would require serious thought before venturing forward.
“Before I would venture a comment, the need, the cost, the ability to diminish traffic congestion and environmental impact would have to be ascertained,” he said.
In the final analysis, Fendig said, if you are in that big of a hurry to get off the island, don’t get on it.
“I’d rather see the island developed low density, single-family residential and keep Frederica Road two lanes so that there is no need for a second causeway.”

Too cost prohibitive, especially when you consider the environmental constraints. It would be a nightmare to attempt this.
I agree with cousin Cap on this one.

Smile St Simons Island, GA

My wife and I have heard many good things about St Simons Island and are taking a vacation there during the 1st week of Oct 15 to check it out as a retirement destination. My one concern is the flood insurance which can be prohibitive. If we decide we really like it we might rent 1st and then buy later. Any advice or recommended people to speak to would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! jog222

A bridge for a half billion to a billion dollars for such a small island.. OK. Have the County pay for most of it then. Won't happen. Then there is the wisdom in the last sentence....
