New to this site. Kinda like it!
Anyway, I'm retiring soon We're from the west coast. (SF peninsula). I have narrowed it down to Georgia. Southern Georgia specifically. I've closed in on either Thomasville or Valdosta. Every time I read something it'seems always supper "pro" or supper "con". I'M looking for locals or truly knowledgeable people who can be honestly objective. One of us will still be working for a while longer. No kids. Real Estate value, low crime. Nice people. Don't much care about skin color, (we're white). But do care about people having good character. So..... where should we be looking, to get that deal of a lifetime?

I don't live in Thomasville, but it is a great town and was always on my list. Short drive down to the coast. But if you don't like flat land, sandy soil, pine trees and very warm summers, it may not suit you.

That part of the state is hot as hell in the summer. Valdosta was the hottest, most humid place I ever visited.

You do realize, I guess, that just a few more miles south and you'd be in Florida where there is no state income tax...

I live in Valdosta now. I moved here from Tallahassee. I went to college in Thomasville for a while. I love Thomasville. The downtown is great. There are awesome restaurants like Jonah's and great locally owned stores. It's only 30 minutes to Tallahassee too. We aren't too fond of Valdosta. It doesn't have as much of the big oaks and southern charm as Thomasville. I Feel like it's always gray here. I have a friend who has been in the Air Force and recently retired. They moved to Valdosta and regret it. They want to move to Thomasville!

Thomasville is an awesome town. And as others have said, it is only 30 minutes to the Florida state capital in Tallahassee (strange but true that the Sunshine State's capital city is so far removed and remote to the rest of Florida). The Panhandle region of Florida has the absolute finest beaches in the Continental United States, and many quaint and charming Southern towns.

Coming from the San Francisco Peninsula it will certainly be a huge change -- but one which educated, open-minded and adventurous people will embrace and enjoy.
