Where are Native Americans in Georgia today? Does anyone know how many people in this state are descendant from the Creek and Cherokee or other Georgia tribes?

I found a map that breaksdown the former tribal areas of the state.

The Creek and Indian nations were forcibly driven from the state by European settlers in the first half of the 19th century (1800s). So except for some state and federal historic sites, there are no communities of native Americans in Georgia like there are in some neighboring states. Google TRAIL OF TEARS, NEW ECHOTA.

Also, New Georgia Encylopedia has a lengthy entry on the subject.

Not a lot is left. Europeans made a good go of genocide when it came to the "savages" with the help of the US government.

Pretty sad I'd say.

Some history that many may not know is that while still in the south many members of the Five Civilized tribes adopted the practices of Black slavery. This practice continued in Oklahoma even after the tribes had been moved out there.

In recent years the descendants of these Black slaves known as Freedmen have been struggling to maintain their tribal status.

This involves the Creek Freedmen:

A lot of the early unmarried settlers in north Georgia took Cherokee wives, as women were at a premium on the frontier. I've met many fellow Georgians over the years that have Cherokee heritage in their family.

This professor at the University of West Georgia gave an interesting presentation on the Creek and Cherokee. It's about an hour long so check it out when you have some spare time.
