Any college or university of decent size (outside of professional schools like medical, law, etc. schools) is going to have art, music, theater, and drama departments, and it's a pretty big stretch to say that those programs at CSU are "very well known" within the Southeast. I've lived in the Carolinas and Georgia for the vast majority of my life and have heard zero about those programs. And any sizable city will have a performing arts venue and an art museum.

Outside of Atlanta, the only standout city for the arts in Georgia is Savannah, thanks in large part to SCAD. Athens may have an argument as well, being home of the state's flagship university. Everywhere else has the arts amenities that you'd expect for a city of a certain size.

As a general rule, when it comes to smaller cities, they get buzz for being progressive cities either because they are tourist friendly (with history and/or geography usually playing a big role) or college towns.

The poll I did linked to Reddit: What is Georgia's most progressive city? - Poll ,had very different results with Athens in first, Atlanta in second and Savannah in third. The reason Atlanta ranks after Athens is because it has a diverse population, while Athens, with a majority of jobs and culture linked to the university is a more leftist city. I would like to see Savannah reach the top of the list in the future, but it faces a similar situation as Atlanta. While in Savannah, scad pulls in tons of rich liberals and the robust art scene attracts more artists who can't afford scads tuition. However, Savannah's economy is not dependent on scad, and again (smaller scale than Atlanta) the population is more diverse, rendering the proportion of leftist lower.

Do that many metro Atlantans have their head in the sand regarding the rest of the state? (Speaking of the liberality of Athens and Savannah)

The other votes for Augusta and Columbus are obviously from boosters on this board. Columbus especially. Nobody in their right mind would consider Columbus more progressive than Savannah or Atlanta. Or heck, even Athens.

As usual, polls in this forum have been rendered useless by a specific few..

Name one person from Augusta who responded in the comments? The residents of Augusta could obviously care less. And i only responded because Newsboy who has a habit of making sarcastic remarks about Augusta mentioned the city.

You missed my point entirely.

Regardless of the fact that Albany doesn't quite hit the threshold of 100k people, it is about as progressive as places like Columbus and Macon.. Vice versa. Someone mentioned Valdosta, probably jokingly. It's on par with the aforementioned cities/towns, too.

Quite the contrary. These places are far more traditional and conservative.

Cue the butt hurt comments in 3.. 2.. 1..
