On topic, I present an idea most here would shoot down. First off, the settlers on Sapelo should be using Stephens-Day to keep their property taxes in line, so not sure what that is all about. Second, I propose that Ossabaw Island is developed into a Hilton Head style resort. Close to Savannah & within Chatham County, this would provide a much needed and desired boost to the local economy & tax base. It would help lure affluent travelers to Savannah & give the locals a second beach in which to choose from. There are plenty of underdeveloped/underdeveloped islands in GA..wouldn't it be great if we could develop one the right way?

I would enter this conversation, but I am still processing that there are islands between Tybee and Sea Island. (Yes, that is sarcasm). Seriously though...I have lived in GA 14 years, travelled most of the state and have been to Tybee, Sea, SSI, Jekyll, and Cumberland. I wouldn't even begin to know how to get to the others and I imagine most other Georgians wouldn't either. I guess that's the preservation plan. I didn't know about the abandoned mansions. That seems so wasteful.

If you had a boat, you'd find that those "inaccessible" islands are quite popular (and indeed CROWDED) on the weekends. The beaches on Little Tybee Island and Wassaw Island are sometimes more crowded than the public (car accessible) beaches, believe it or not. But that's mostly a Savannah thing. Taking a boat out to the barrier islands is a HUGELY popular pastime for generations of Chatham Countians.

BTW, Atlanta Magazine's Allison Entrekin wrote an excellent article on Cumberland for this month's Southbound supplement titled Treasure Island.

Indeed. Thank you for highlighting this. We should be on the watch if ideas like this get legs. I hate that idea, for Ossabaw. Sapelo, it's already perfect. the county is using all the tricks in the book to herd them away. Sure they will win eventually. For now though shhhh. Just be quiet bub. Our barrier island beaches are almost unpopulated. It's awesome. You wanna buy tshirts and trinkets on the beach there's Myrtle and Daytona Beach. Close by. You can go there on a day trip!! Yes sometimes little Tybee or Ossabaw get busy but sometimes you can go and no one else there. Sounds mostly like you need a boat, or friends, with a boat 843.

i'm not directing this as you 843 personally: The idea, that concept, of taking one of the last preserved shorelines in the east US, sounds ruinous. Yes it will be shot down hopefully. I am glad most folks here are big on conserving the shorelines and refuges. Sure, there will hopefully good be development, like maybe infill in Brunswick, ST Marys, Savannah etc. But Ossabaw ugh hope not.
