I'm still not convinced by the magazine on Columbus. I still think we would see a situation more like South Carolina, or one of the other scenarios that I oulined in my previous post

Question about that Columbus brochure - can anyone tell me what that huge factory was? And is it still around? It looks like quite the impressive building in that pic.

Huh? Say what? This promotional spread is at least 60 years old. It's cool to look at but quite dated -- the photos and the population statistics. I wouldn't base your views of any "potential first-tier city" on a brochure published when gray-haired men were toddlers, and when Rosemary Clooney (George's aunt) was at the top of the pop music charts.

Sheesh, folks!

Even though I keep seeing Georgia as being Mississippi like, Alabamish at best without a Metro Atlanta, I do agree with the way the poll is leaning Towards Savannah as being the Top Dog here, especially with it's Coastal location. I don't agree that Augusta or Columbus would be a Top Dog in the state, just due to location, location , location... I could even see Macon as being the Capital and or 2nd up City or even Top Dog City just due to Central Location and Freeway system in the State and Savannah being 2nd Up. The only thing that I could see putting Savannah as 2nd up though would be it's Current Historic nature. It's Historic Preservation kinda keeps it locked in a box a bit... Wish Savannah could take on some of the Boston Traits, History Mixed with Modern high rises blended well...

I seriously doubt it would be Savannah for the same reason Wilmington, Charleston, Mobile, etc. aren't the current-day powerhouses of their respective states. The same factors that mitigated their growth after the Civil War mitigated Savannah's, with or without Atlanta.

I'm not sure about the size, maybe around 250,000-350,000 sqaure feet. And yes, half of the building has been converted into lofts, while the other half was destroyed by a fire in 2011.
The Lofts at Swift Mill

Now Bibb Mill was the largest textile Mill in the south.
