According to BestPlaces websites crime ratings of 1-100 with 100 being worst, here are some GA counties.

Muscogee: Violent 70, Property 68
Bibb: Violent 71, Property 68
Richmond: Violent 76, Property 70
Chatham: Violent 58, Property 58
Dougherty: Violent 84, Property 80
Clarke: Violent 71, Property 73

Why dont people talk about Athens crime problem as much as they do some of the other cities in GA? Do they get a pass because of UGA and demographics? The last time I checked the poverty rates their's were comparable too, if not higher than some of those other counties.

Because of demographics.

One thing that factors into why people aren't talking about it is that, of all the counties listed in your post, Athens-Clarke is the only one that doesn't have its own local TV news stations. So, not as much is known about what goes on in Athens nearly to the degree that goes on in Augusta, Macon, et al. Athens exists as a kind of satellite of Atlanta in terms of news media.

Its not the whole reason, but its part of it.

Crime in Savannah is a lot lower than I expected. And what is going on in Albany? Wow, the crime rates there seem out of control

Probably because it's a beloved college town and people go there and have a good time and if they're not victims of crime themselves, then their memory of Athens is that they had a good time and it's a fun place.

Who is giving Athens a "pass" exactly? Maybe you just stumbled upon this information, but it's no secret to anybody who knows anything about Athens, currently lives in Athens, ever lived in Athens, or regularly visits Athens -- and especially the 36,000 students at the University of Georgia and every single one of their parents!

In fact, any crime that involves UGA students (on or off campus) is always BIG NEWS not just in Athens, but statewide. Here's on recent example that made the FRONT PAGE of every newspaper in Georgia!

The Atlanta TV stations cover Athens news, especially crime and politics, because of the obvious interest and connections between thousands of Metro Atlanta families who have kids over there. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of alumni. At least as much as they do Gainesville, Rome, LaGrange, Carrollton and other far-fringe areas of the TV DMA.

Beyond that, the Athens MSA stands alone and the RTZ extends across all of NE Georgia, with the Athens Banner-Herald, the Red and Black, the Athens Observer and dozens of other print media saturating the region. Because Athens is just out of range of many Atlanta radio stations, it's got quite a large and competitive radio station lineup as well -- including two powerhouses news operations in WAGU and WNGC.

Last I heard, the AJC doesn't circulate to Athens anymore -- unbelievably.

Yea I've known for awhile from this very forum that Athens has more crime than Oconee County. And it's not like there's a weekly thread dumping on other cities either.
