And before that, it was Turner Air Force Base. A brewery has been built where the runway used to be.

I remember Turner Air Force Base. I was stationed at Marine Corps Supply Center in Albany in 1966. No good memories. Being sent to South East Asia for two years was an upgrade in my opinion.

First duty station out of boot camp. First month on mess duty seven days a week 14 hours a day. Then six months rebuilding M1 rifles for shipment to S. Vietnam. Boring assembly line factory work. Albany in those days was a typical Deep South redneck town.

Everything off base was strictly segregated. I’m white but the way black Marines were treated was reprehensible. They had to stay on the black side of town. White only restaurants, hotels and bars. And a lot of these folks had served in Vietnam or were going there. Luckily I was there only for six months before reassignment.

Albany is not segregated today. In fact, African Americans hold significant local political power. I grew up near Albany and while I would not choose to live there, it has become a much better place.
