Georgia House passes Interstate 14 resolution (Atlanta, Columbus: construction, high school, costs)

Georgia is looking to the federal government to build a new interstate highway across the Peach State.

The state House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution Thursday supporting the proposed construction of Interstate 14 from Columbus, Ga., to Augusta, Ga.

The Georgia stretch would become part of an interstate highway that would run from El Paso, Texas, through that state, Louisiana, Mississippi. Alabama and Georgia, linking with I-20 at Augusta. The only portion of the project that has been completed is a 25-mile stretch that opened in 2017 near Killeen, Texas.

The proposed route would connect a number of military bases, seaports and major cities.

That seems to be a distance of about 1,600 miles. Assuming that it is a 6 lane highway and it costs $7 million per mile to construct (https://medium.com/@TimSylvester/i-a...a-2e8baeac2a46) that is $11.2 billion (conservatively). That's actually not near as much as I would have guessed.

Most of this would be in rural sparsely traveled parts of Georgia. 6 lanes would not be needed. Another I-16 but no port traffic.

Also, it would incorporate sections of existing roads, such as the Fall Line Freeway, US 80, etc, further minimizing construction costs.

Looking at the bigger picture of this as a true interstate, one of its appeals would be to give east/west traffic in the southeast a way to bypass Atlanta. People along the Gulf Coast and all of Texas would have a route to the east coast that bypasses Atlanta. Outside of 20, the only real thru traffic alternative is I-10 which stays way south or going to the far north to 40. The portion from Meridian to Augusta needs to come online first.

This resolution has about as much impact as when a high school team is recognized by the city council.

Any forward progress fom this is going to come from USDOT and Congress.

This does look like a big step toward progress from USDOT and Congress. I also agree that this can't come soon enough. Something like this should have happened decades ago. This will be a vital corridor connecting many of Georgia's major cities while providing an alternate East West route bypassing the Atlanta congestion.


As far as lanes it would likely have 2-3 lanes in rural areas and 3-4 lanes in most urban areas.
