I also posted this in the Augusta area section.

Asking for a 27 yo friend who just finished welding program and was hired to work on a three-year project at the plant in/near Waynesboro. He doesn't know about city data. Him and his soon-to-be wife are moving in June, but he'll check it out before then. He's going to be making good money and wants a nice, safe place. I really don't know anything about the area either - more isolated than I thought. Waynesboro itself has 42% of residents living below poverty according to Wiki, which suggests it might not be the best place, but I honestly don't know. Are there decent spots in Waynesboro or neighboring communities? What about Augusta's southern burbs? They don't have kids. He said he gets a per diem for housing for a certain amount of time until he finds a permanent place.

At the plant, sounds like Vogtle maybe? If so, it may be a Waynesboro address but it's 20 minutes outside of the town.

Either way a young newly wed couple, I'd say to find a place in Augusta. Olde Town, a neighborhood next to Downtown would be a good place to start looking for rentals.

It's a quickly gentrifying neighborhood, lots of restored older homes with lots of rentals available and a short walk to the shops, restaurants, and bars. That drive would be around 40 minutes and avoids most of the commute traffic coming in from the north and west parts of the city.

A friend of mine had a 6 month stint at Vogtle and he lived in Olde Towne.
