Retired military couple searching for a town no more than 3 hours from Atlanta, closer being better, with a cool "fun" downtown walkable area with some shops, restaurants, bars (eg the historic Roswell area, the strip malls and stuff away from that little center are not important, can live someplace with or without those kinds of amenities but we really like a sidewalk that fronts some restaurants, bars and shops) Extra bonus points if there's a local brewery- would prefer mountains/hills for the slightly milder summer but it's not a deal breaker. Low to lowish-moderate crime rates and median home values of $300,000 or less. Decent hospital in the area. Bonus points if it's only "slightly conservative" and all points leftward rather than very conservative.

Not glued into GA, could be one of the bordering states. Medium town to medium city size works, not stuck on the population # so much as the *stuff* there is to do.

Does someplace leap to mind when you hear all that?

I know people will say something about crime but Macon have extremely vibrant downtown now, good hospitals, and several local breweries .

Blue Ridge, Georgia. A wonderful, walkable and smaller town with many boutiques, great restaurants, a brewery (maybe 2?) and a few bars, nestled in the beautiful north Georgia mountains with a spectacular lake and tons of outdoor activities.
