Have you ever seen a Peachtree in Georgia? (Atlanta, Greenville: Home Depot, to buy)

Asside from street signs and lottery tickets, I've never seen anything but pine trees.

I'm sure they exist but I guess one would expect to see an abundance of them.

They are farmed fairly extensively in the central portion of the state near the fall line. It's a long-running important crop for the area.

One county was even named for it... Peach County.

There are even a few varieties of peaches name after Georgia.

I planted one peach three in my back yard for the fun of it. If you go to Lowe's/Home Depot in the area they usually have a good many peach treees available if you want to buy one.

I even hear that states like South Carolina, New Jersey, and Ohio are trying to claim themselves more of a peach state than GA. California is said to produce more which is understandable but I want to say that GA has more quality than quantity over Cali but SC and NJ can't have better peaches than us.

I think for some time now Greenville County, SC has eclipsed the entire state of GA in terms of peach production.

When I moved down here 20 years ago, that was one of the first things I noticed on the drive down I-85 between Gastonia and Greenville was acres and acres of peach trees, punctuated by roadside stands. In fact, the Peachoid in Gaffney once stood in the middle of a large field of peach trees. So, I'm not all that surprised that South Carolina outproduces Georgia.

New Jersey peach production, OTOH, is a bit surprising.

Yea everything I've read for a long while has California and South Carolina beating us these days in terms of numbers, ..... but we still have the quality

The Peach State was a post-civil war marketing ploy. At the time Georgia was probably a leading producer, but farmers in the south were looking for other crops than cotton, because tax policies dominated by the north changed the export dynamics for crops like cotton. Farmers needed crops to make money on within the US.

Peaches was something people from the north seemed willing to buy and Atlanta was able to eventually use refrigerated railroad box cars to increase domestic trade, so it was an important crop at the time.

I think we are top producers of Chicken, Pecans, and Peanuts. We are still in the top few spots for cotton production. I also have read that we produce more blueberries, than peaches nowadays.

Either way we will always be "The Peach State."

Yes - they are abundant in central and south Georgia. When I was 16, I worked during the summer on a peach farm. That was not fun at all...
