Macon on other hand has fast growing Warner Robins to the south and because of Atlanta n the north.Mass transit studies for the state almost all say Macon is logistically better .
Great Post well spoken.......LOL

Okay so Augusta(city) only is a big as it is because of consolidation. According to you of course. Even though alot of major cities and other cities are consolidated. But explain why are suburbs are so much bigger tha Savannah, Macon, and Columbus. Where did all that growth come from. And by growth did you mean new ppl or construction projects.

Aiken county has 25,000 more ppl than houston county. Macon has one fast growing area in Houston county in Warner Robins.

Augusta has two fast growing areas in Aiken county in North Augusta and
Aiken.

Aiken (Augusta) 151,800

Houston(macon)127,530

Lee County(columbus) 125,781

Columbia(augusta)106,887

Liberty(savannah) 62, 571

Russell(columbus) 50, 085

Effingham(savannah) 48, 954

Jones(macon) 26, 973

The Augusta city limits health is whats important. Its not bad in my opinion but it lacks a feel of real urbanity that no matter how much growth in the suburbs it will not matter.CORE CITIES will be what sustains the suburbs in the long run.You know as well as I know that Augusta's major employers are the Military, the Veterans Admin and the MCG.It has no colleges OF SPECIAL NOTE.Headquartes of any majore companies. It suffers from the fact that its to close to Savannah.
I remember before consolidation in around the mid 90's,the population of the CITY of Augusta was at 45,000 people while the Metro area was almost over 400,000.If Atlanta had not have its sprawling suburbs, that might not be a bad thing for Augusta.Unforturnately unlike Atlanta where the city is still the main economic engine more so than the surrounding areas.Augusta does not have that luxury.People have to go to spead out locations for the same stores and resturants that they left in there own suburb. This not a good sign.Think about it.Downtown Stateboro is more active than Augusta's!!

ANother Example!Warner Robins was in Macons MSA,until it became to big. The definition the government determines as an MSA basically said that the economic engine that drives Warner Robins is DISTINCTLY seperated from those economic engines that drive Macons econmy.North Augusta is already seperate .Atlanta is 134sq miles.Augusta is 306 sq mi.Those people used to be in the county of Richmond not Augusta.

Macon is lucky because there are absolutely no other cities of equall size or larger (other than Atlanta) around. The suburbs of Atlanta are drawing people that work in Atlanta but shop, eat and play in Macon on a weekly/daily basis.Eventually entertaiment, shopping and places to eat will be attracted to a nice downtown area people from as close as Warner Robins but as far as Dublin,Cordele,Americaus and even Albany will come and eventually settle.

Augusta is really only now getting serious about the liveability factor of its downtown. If Augusta people got people to want to live intown and get business to follow fatser. It will work.Augusta needs to become a golf resort town where the rich come up the river and park there yaughts.BE dined in 5 star resturants and hotels. The canals should be like San Antonio or Venice. It should be the GOLFERS PARADISE ALL YEAR AROUND.The streets should be made into wide boulevards with stone edgings. It could be the Monte Carlo of the south.Casinos's would bring all of the world class entertainment.Year around not jus the Masters. There should be a SOUL INSTITUTE named in Honor of James Brown out of a working school of arts dedicated to the advancement of soul music world wide. They could give and award for best new soul Artist worlwide and have artist come to a lavish ceremony.
I got more but none of this will happen before MACON or Savannah any time soon because:
1)The museums, publicfacilities, public arts are in a sad shape.
2)the most anti city people next to Macon's suburbanites.
3)More money leading out to the suburbs than to stay in the city.
4)What is Augusta's idenity?
5)Logistics is not that great. If there was no Savannah yes.

In short, people will eventually move to create an area they have the least resitance to being.People need good schools, low taxes, less crime and a sense of community. Why move to downtown Augusta? In thinking this through more,i am actually lowering Macon on equal with Augusta with a very slight edge because of its proximity to Atlanta. It really depends on if some mass transit link between the two becomes available in the near future. In which case Macon will boom way ahead and fast.

P.S. Macon is in BIBB and Jones county.Warner Robins and Perry are in Houston County.
Lee county is ALBANY
Columbus is in Muscogee county.a small part is in Russel county, but that part is in Alabama which is Phenix CIty ,AL

Macon man has novel idea for passenger rail service

Macon man has novel idea for passenger rail service - Local & State - Macon (http://www.macon.com/198/story/491588.html - broken link)

A Macon man with a track record for innovation is pitching an unusual idea to politicians and officials making plans for a commuter rail line from Atlanta to Griffin and, eventually, Macon.

Robert Green, who previously worked on an underground imaging system, wants Georgia to build a train alongside Interstate 75. He wants it to pick up passengers and drop them off at stations along the way, but he doesn't want the train to stop.

State officials labelled the idea interesting, even if it's completely untested and potentially a monstrous expense. They're moving ahead with plans to use existing rail lines to shuttle people between Griffin and Atlanta, a long-discussed plan that won the support of Gov. Sonny Perdue this year as gas prices jumped to $4 a gallon.

Interesting post....
It would make much more sense to have one down 75 to Macon rather than Columbus which would be a waste of time and money.
A rail on south 85 from airport down to Auburn would be perfect.
This would go through Newnan,LaGrange,West Point/Lanett(for the KIA employees) and of course down to Auburn University.

Club Car is headquarted in Augusta. And when is the last time have you been to Augusta? Especially when is the last time you were in downtown Augusta? In 2007 downtown added over 80 new businesses and 275 jobs. The whites building 100 condos were finished earlier this year. I could go on and on. If you haven't been here in 2 -5 years alot has change. Even from 2007 more construction has hapen.

Well my vote was for Savannah just because when you consider all of the other potential players in GA they depend heavily on ATL & SAV for attracting business with the exception of Columbus, which is always an exception to all the rules. They sadly became an afterthought with a dead end interstate instead of a true thoroughfare. Sorry Columbus! Nothing but love for ya though.

I have to throw some wildcards out there though:

Brunswick - for all the same reasons MAC has plus some of SAV’s but mostly just feeding off JAX & SAV. I have been impressed with its growth from a complete dead lull in the past 10-20 yrs

Valdosta - Now that is a true wildcard and I am sure it made more than one of you say Huh? Really? Why? Well its stand alone. Has somehow amazingly attracted & held onto to a theme park / zoo. VSU is really making a name for itself in the Univ systems. Whether or not it is really a good name, I am not sure but I hear it mentioned more often than not. It has crazy amounts of room for expansion without worries of borders or neighbors to steal its thunder (as quite as it maybe) No one really has anything bad to say about it. May not say much but rarely a complaint is heard, unlike the power bickering residents of the other named metro status towns. It is welcoming to commerce!!! Without allowing too terrible much sprawl, although a short tangent of that was experienced on its north end perimeter. Still not bad though because it joined two old growth areas. Overall quality of life and the price you have to pay to get it are actually fair, unlike the other mentioned cities. It might be small but it has a hell of a lot of determination and fight. MOST IMPORTANTLY: ITS CITIZENS ARE PROUD TO BE THERE, for the most part anyway. There is always one disgruntled person out there just waiting for the right time to attack.

I really wish Atlanta's growth had been more spread across the state and that the second tier cities would have grown more and Atlanta less and that Georgia looked more like North Carolina where Raleigh/Durham and Winston-Salem/Greensboro are much larger than any of the second cities in Gerogia.

However, I don't think any of the second cities will be able to pull much growth away from Atlanta. Columbus with several headquarters and Fort Benning and Savannah with the port would seem natural choices, but so far the explosive growth happening in other parts of the south haven't hit there, nor Augusta or Macon. Steady, slow growth, but nothing on the lines of the North Carolina cities, Nashville, Orlando, etc.

Atlanta will continue to be the growth center for Georgia at the rest of the state's expense. Don't necessarily think that is best, just what is.
