After my first year in college, I'm looking to switch banks so I have easier access to my account on campus and back home, and I've been looking into Atlanta based credit unions as an option that may be best for me. My only specific needs are that it has zero surcharge for using other banks' ATMs and has an online banking option.

Googling for Atlanta based credit unions brings up tons of different organizations that all seem exactly the same, any advice or recommendations? Anecdotes from your experience with one or more of these credit unions would be much appreciated, thanks.

Any particular reason for "Atlanta based" or "credit union"? Personally, I haven't had a local bank branch in nearly 20 years and could care less where anyone is "based" as they're all following federal guidelines. If you can come off those 2 things, then I'd recommend USAA. I know, they bill themselves as "for military only", but that's just the image they try to portray... it's actually illegal to deny you based on that (and they never ask anyway).

The ATM thing isn't "free", but they reimburse $15/month. Well, some are free.. I think Bank of America is one, not sure on others (I never never use ATMs), if you travel out of the country there are some free/no foreign transaction fee ATM's in most countries and they Still reimburse up to $15. To put it more simply, I've never paid for an ATM use. Even when traveling in more cash-based countries and getting money as needed (whatever the maximum is for that country).

Of all the banks I've been through, USAA has been the least annoying/troublesome of them all. Probably why I haven't switched away in over 2 decades, just no reason.
