My husband and I are retired in our 60's. I am white and my husband and daughter are hispanic. We are looking for somewhere quiet, peaceful and friendly. We are friendly and polite people. My husband wants to work in agriculture. I am a homebody who loves to crochet and cook. I believe we will fit in well in Albany. My only concern is the registration for our car. Its a 2018 chevy spark. I am worried about how much our tags will cost for it. My daughter says it could cost $400-500 to get Georgia tags. I hope not.

You can read all about the car TAVT at this website, there's even a calculator.

As for Albany, it and the area can be all those things you are looking for. It has crime issues in the poorer neighborhoods, but for the most part it's contained within those. The north part of the city and into southern Lee County is the more suburban area. The city has a lot of interesting history and the downtown area along the river is transforming into a cool place to hang out in.

This is probably not pertinent to your situation, but I lived in Albany in 1964 and I thought it was the best place I have ever lived . I don’t know what its like now, but back then it was a great place and I suspect it is still a nice place to live. Good luck. As for the car registration, yes , it will be rather expensive, but I think the law has been changed this year, so maybe not so bad.

I grew up very near Albany and my sister's family lives there, so I visit a few times a year. However, I would not move there. In south Georgia, I'd move to Thomasville.

Find a home located outside of town, in the middle of a pecan orchard. You will think that you are in heaven

Do not move to Albany/Dougherty County or the area. Ignorance, politics, and cronyism have resulted in Albany becoming a world leader per capita in COVID-19 cases. The hospital does not have the beds to treat the 500+ cases of infection and life flighting people out left and right. The hospital alone has experienced 25 deaths and the coroner has said there have been another 10-15 deaths at home. Keep in mind that Dougherty County has a population of 89,000.

I have to agree with this poster.

Now Savannah, on the other hand, seems to be a really hot spot for retirees.

New residents to Georgia pay TAVT at a rate of 3% (New Georgia Law effective July 1, 2019).
