I'm looking for some suggestions on a fun weekend trip this Summer. We are in North Ga and would like to stay within about a 5 hour drive. The only places that pop in my head is Savannah and Charleston. We are not looking for a beach or amusment park setting. I will be bringing my 78 yr old Mother In Law so a place like Savannah is ideal, lots of history and a city we can walk in, but I just can't think of anything Any suggestions??

When I saw your post my immediate thought was Savannah and Tybee Island so looks like you are on the right track. Shop, eat and "tour" Savannah, rest and relax on Tybee. I can't think of anything I would rather do

I love Savannah too, but I was hoping to try something different I seem to always fall back on the same places to visit. I know my MIL would love to go, she's from Michigan and has never been. I have an extra copy of Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil and if we decide to do Savannah I will send it to her to read. I'm sure it will be a little risque for her, but I think reading it makes your trip more entertaining!

I agree. If you really want to make it risque, head out to Club One and let her meet Lady Chabliss ROFL Now that's a trip!

I wish I could recommend something else but that is my place to go too lol

Lady Chablis moved to Columbia, SC years ago, but the Club One is alive and well

How about Asheville NC? She would probably enjoy the Biltmore House, and the community is very artsy.

I don't know when in the summer your are considering going to Savannah or Charleston, but don't forget the heat and humidity are rather rough.

What about Helen, GA; Ashville, NC; or Blowing Rock, NC?

LovinDecatur, We went to Biltmore during Thanksgiving so I would rather not go there again, once every several years is good enough for me

munchkin, what's in Blowing Rock, NC? I know all about the heat and humidity, we lived in Charleston for 4 years and and the other 12 we've been in various cities in Georgia.....!

We'll probably end up in Savannah again, I just love the atmosphere in that city!

CalieCat, if you do return to Savannah consider a side trip to St Simons Island...it's a beautiful place, with a pier and lighthouse, dedicated bike and walking trails and lots of history (author Eugenia Price's St Simons Trilogy are three novels based on the island's history, and your M-I-L would probably enjoy them).
SSI is about 1 hr 15 min south of Savannah.
