Judge declines to halt COVID-related eviction moratorium

ATLANTA - A federal judge in Atlanta declined Thursday to put on hold a Trump administration directive that halts the eviction of certain renters through the end of the year in an effort to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus..."

"To be eligible for protection, renters must have an income of $198,000 or less for couples filing jointly, or $99,000 for single filers; demonstrate they’ve sought government help to pay rent; declare that they can’t pay because of COVID-19 hardships; and affirm that they are likely to become homeless if evicted."

That's a really high income amount. How likely is it that a family making nearly $200K would become homeless if evicted? Or does that amount assume pre-COVID earnings?

A sad and scary statistic.
$50 a night is $1500 a month. And that's a nightly rate too low to even hope to find in ATL metro. So how is this being paid for?

These are either families living in their cars for 3 days, and then getting one night in a hotel, or those who had committed to ending their lease and couldn't qualify for new housing on UI benefits.

Either way, the scenario implies SOME money is there, which begs the question what exactly happened for the rest of the 30,000 working families to end up in that VERY specific situation?

160,000 Georgians could be at risk of eviction if current ban expires at end of month

Time is running out for Congress to help struggling Americans, with current COVID-19 relief measures set to expire Dec. 31. That includes a ban on evictions.

Channel 2′s Matt Johnson spoke to people and organizations who are worried about a surge of evictions next month..."

I’m assuming Pre-Covid. Someone making $100k a year that can’t pay rent has bigger issues.

My ultimate assumption is this would be prevalent to those who’s work became unstable and their steady income was either reduced or became unreliable due to the pandemic.

That was my thought as well, and makes sense. But as someone who doesn’t get anything despite taking a massive beating during this pandemic I’d like to be sure that it isn’t abused.

Often times whenever it comes to Government Financial Assistance in America, it is the middle or upper middle classes that are alienated from receiving aid, or basically - the vast majority of Americans
