Jimmy Carter's comments about the Georgia General Assembly and its voting laws is apropos here, if only because he's a figure without stakes in playing political posturing. Is there a Republican figure with similar "neutrality"? My first thought was Bush but they're certainly not equals but have had some role in voting rights. Carter comment here: https://www.cartercenter.org/news/pr...nt-030921.html.

Default Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Harold Melton asks Georgia lawmakers for help with trial backlog

Tuesday in Atlanta, Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Harold Melton asked the Georgia General Assembly to pass legislation aimed at attempting to shrink a serious backlog of jury trials resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

Quote:
The bill, which the Georgia Senate passed overwhelmingly early this month and is now before the state House of Representatives, would allow trial courts to continue suspending statutory speedy trial deadlines during judicial emergencies such as the pandemic.

Last week, Melton ordered jury trials to resume in Georgia a year after he suspended them because of COVID-19. But so many cases have piled up that it will take two or three years to work through the backlog, he said during his annual State of the Judiciary message to a joint session of the House and Senate.
