I had to swap #25 and #26. I'll will continue with the 15,000 to 30,000 cities this weekend.

The City of Atlanta posted 12,000 new residents (+2.4%) in just three years. Shows just how dynamic the city is, despite the dumb ”movement” to de-annex Buckhead and the scramble in Fulton to create newly incorporated cities (to head off any future consolidation with Atlanta, IMO).

With Georgia's second-tier cities, there were also no boundary changes, but Columbus lost 5,000 residents (-2.4%) in the the same three years. I imagine that's mostly down to troop movements and military families leaving the area. Augusta lost 1,200 residents (-0.6%) and Macon around 800 (-0.5%). Savannah lost 40 people (-0.02%, which is insignificant). Athens gained 1,300 residents (+1%, which is strong).

I saw the headlines from census.gov, Population Rebound for Many Cities in Northeast and Midwest. Detroit added 1800 people, first gain since the 1950s, that's a big deal for them.

Agree with this 100%. Ask anyone outside Georgia (and a few inside it too) where Sandy Springs is located and I doubt many would know it's a suburb of Atlanta, or even know what it is. If Fulton wants to really improve its economic climate, it should encourage consolidation with Atlanta, a city known internationally. And, as you noted, it's grown over the last year while the second-tier cities lost population, another telling statistic.

Consolidation is politically impossible for Atlanta and Savannah. Both cities have a long history of separate and distinctive suburban communities that jealously guard their independence. Many of those communities are already incorporated, so their city charters can't be dissolved or revoked. While Georgia permits consolidation, the kind of deep civic identity and unity it requires has never been strong in Atlanta and Savannah.

I'm not really sure if I trust some of those estimates, but if I recall, GA still gained 100K+ residents in 2023. The Atlanta suburbs estimates seem quite odd, IMO. Columbus, maybe because of military movement.

I don't think city populations, within old boundary lines, matter much. As you said, the state gained a nice 100,000+ residents in 2023 alone (+317,000 since the 2020 census). Several GA metros are growing as fast as Atlanta in percentage terms. There were considerable 2020-23 gains in new residents for metro Savannah (+20,000), Augusta (+18,000), Gainesville (+14,000), Warner Robins (+9,000), and Athens (+6,500). Just three years.
