Does anyone know for sure exactly where it was started??
People in Georgia claim it originated on St Simons Island near Brunswick Georgia..
People in Virginia claim it was invented in Brunswick County, VA.
So what's the truth??

The New Georgia Encyclopedia seems to concede that the stew did indeed originate in Virginia..

Georgia and Virginia stews are actually quite different in my experience...VA Stew is 'chunkier' and more like what the average person thinks of as a stew. In the GA stew, the ingredients are more finely chopped and cooked down, almost like a puree. The GA version is what I'll always consider true Brunswick Stew...NGE be damned.

I haven't had the stuff in VA, but the Brunswick Stew from the Georgia Pig is fabulous!

As Virginia is older than Georgia, I woudn't be surprised if their version is the original.

BTW & FWIW, I never trust Wikipedia as a reliable source.

In my opinion, a person shouldn't trust *any* single source of information, but should always verify the info one finds from multiple sources when possible.
