Hello. Mother of two possibly relocating to Gainesville area from out of state. Looking for advice on good neighborhoods and good schools. Husband and I will both work in Gainesville. How is traffic if we live in the surrounding area? What towns around Gainesville would be best? Looking to spend 250-300K on home. Prefer large lots, 2200+ sq ft, not in cookie-cutter neighborhoods. Safety and schools priority. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have read that Gainesville has a pretty high crime rate, so I personally would not move there. But as far as I can tell, if you're there to work, Buford looks very nice.

There is a part of Gainesville that is in Forsyth county. Better schools and less illeagals in Forsyth. You will be within 15 minutes of the city of Gainesville, and traffic will be minimal for your commute. Look in Northern Forsyth county, which will also be Cumming area. There are tons of new sub-divisions being built, but not to many come with much land. There are tons of resales on the market now also. This area should be a easy commute to Gainesville. No Major HWY's to be stuck on.

The Washington Post just did an article on Gainesville GA. I don't have a link, but if you search for "Gainesville Ga" on their website it will come up. The title of the article was something like "Small Towns against Immigration" or something like that. Anyway, it paints a nice picture of the Gainesville culture and area, not necessarily positive.

Would not personally live in Gainesville. You need to check surrounding towns, such as Cumming, Buford, Cleveland, Dahlonega, Dawsonville. You can get more house for your money if you look towards Cleveland and Dahlonega. Schools are also much smaller and personable, only 1 high school in both of those towns.

The wife and I have lived in Gainesville for about 2 years now and love it. When we first moved here we heard about the crime rate and gangs that are here, but we have never seen it! Schools are ok not great but dont suck. We always wanted lakefront property and this is about the cheapest place you can do it in the country. With lake homes starting in the low 200's. The crime rate is going down here, primarily because everywhere you go you will see a Hall County Sheriffs car. lol The city has been awarded the city of Excellence merit. The cost of living is relatively cheap for living in "luxury resort" style city. There is alot to do here. Especially if you are into the boating thing. We have 3 colleges here. Brenau (womens only school) Gainesville State and Lanier Tech. What I personally love about the city is that it is really big in size but not overpopulated. Well I hope was ome help to you!

Lived in Gainesville for 4 yrs
Hello,
We have lived in Gainesville for 4 yrs and we love it. We are teachers in the city system and contrary to what you hear the Gainesville city school system seems to be sought after. It is a model observed by atlanta districts and has been recognized nationally. Many parents pay to send their children to the district when they live in the county. We unfortunately have to move back to FL as our parents are aging but we have loved it here and found it to be one of our favorite places we have lived.
