We are thinking of relocating to Athens and were wondering if anyone could give us any information. We were hoping for some feedback on neighborhoods, jobs, things to do and just generally living in the area. Pros? Cons? We're in our 50s, no children, so schools would not be an issue. Thank you for any help you can provide.

There have been a couple of threads about Athens. Try doing a search and I think you will locate them.

My cousin lives there and she likes it. A fairly liberal college town with lots of nice amenities - restaurants and music etc. And people are very friendly. I was there for a conference last Fall and I enjoyed myself and even looked a bit a real estate. I also think it is very affordable. For me I'm thinking it might be a bit small and it is like 80 miles from a major airport. If it was closer to Atlanta, I might really consider it. I love the downtown and in-town areas of Athens -- some gorgeous houses at really reasonable prices.

Thank you for your response LLD. We're hoping to take a trip there soon to check it out. It's really hard to get to know a place without living there. I found that the housing seemed to be affordable too. We already live in a small town in North Florida, so Athens would be a lot bigger to us than what we're used to.

I moved here from Florida to Athens last April. It is small, the downtown area is a mess for driving and parking, (some one-way streets that add to the confusion), the university seems everywhere so lots of students stepping off curbs against the lights (bless their hearts!) , delivery trucks off-loading in the middle of the street, shops are really not cute but quite tacky, and restaurants all over Athens are fast food or chain type. You basically have three supermarkets which are; a mediocre Publix, Krogers (expensive) and Ingles, one small and one large (Large one is great). Please don't expect good shopping. The best you'll have is good old Target. Everything else is what you will find anywhere. (Big TJ MAXX, though)

House prices are excellent, can still get a small but good house with a large yard for about in the $90's, but watch the neighborhood. All in all a pretty good place to live, people are friendly and ALL of Georgia is gorgeous. Good luck!

Hmmm... well I've eaten at some of the restaurants in downtown Athens and they were excellent and also quite well reviewed by some top food critics in Atlanta. And let me tell you that I'm extremely picky about saying a restaurant is good. I like 4 and 5 star stuff.

I can't remember the name of the last place I ate -- some Asian fusion place but it was delicious! And it had a great review from the Atlanta critics and IMO it definitely lived up to it!

East-West Bistro is great!
DePalma's is excellent.
Last Resort is wonderful, too!

Athens has the best food in the state (IMO).
