Is Atlanta's dominance over the state of Georgia a good or bad thing? Also, how has this "dominance" helped or hurt other Georgia cities?

It has brought a lot of money into the state, as well as people. There are areas of GA that have definitely benefitted from the presence of 5.5 MM people in the metro area:

The mountain communities
Coastal GA
Savannah
The lakes - Oconee, Lanier, Allatoona, Hartwell, et al

Yes, but what about Macon, Augusta, Columbus, Rome, and Valdosta?

It's sad really. In states like NC, FL, TX, there isnt just 1 main city. In GA, there's ATL and that's pretty much it. The state of GA depends on Atlanta more than NC,FL, TX depend on any 1 city.

While they're not considered major metropolises, Augusta, Columbus, Savannah and Macon aren't exactly Hooterville, either.

Atlanta is the city the State loves to hate. It brings in enormous amounts of money to the whole State, but also brings in smog, crime, and congestion (for those who have to pass through it from point A to point B). So the State has a love/hate relationship with it.

Cities like Savannah would survive due to tourism, and Columbus would due to the military. Macon however, might shrivel up without the influence of Atlanta so close, and honestly, the thriving tourist industry of Chattanooga, TN might not be close to what it is today without chunks of metro Atlantans taking weekend and day trips up there to avoid our own downtown area.

So, overall from an economic standpoint, Atlanta is probably a good thing for some areas surrounding it (and even Chattanooga), but no, it's not a free ride and there's crap that comes with the gold, too.

Well said Greg. However, I'm worried that the Macon lovers on this site will be quick to defend their territory. While I do agree with your statement on Macon, I'm not sure I agree 100%. Yes, Macon is within 75 miles of Metro Atlanta and there are MANY people who commute back and fourth or possibly even take mini day trips just to get away for a few hours. However, there is also Robbins Air Force Base in Warner Robbins that help their metro out as well. There are also quite a few companies based in the Macon area as well to help keep it afloat. I-75 certainly helps with the northern states coming through (or close at least) on their way to Florida and back. Macon is a historic town with beautiful buildings and lets not forget the Cherry Blossom Festival. I could go on and add a few more things but I hope this will be enough to defend my fellow Maconites.

I personally love Atlanta and am proud to have the city call Georgia it's home. With literally half of the state's population, I'm not quite sure how our state would be without it. It certainly helps our port authority here in Savannah as well as Savannah's tourism. (Yes, there are many people that visit Savannah from out of state and internationally, but I'm sure Atlanta has had some kind of influence as a result of this). IMHO, I think Georgia would be South Carolina without Atlanta. No offense to my fellow Palmetto State neighbors, you have a beautiful diverse state over there!

Metro Augusta is closing on 600,000 people. If they hurry up and build Interstate 3 Savannah-Augusta-Greenville or Clinton SC. And I-14 Columbus-Macon-Augusta. That would bring more growth to the other cities.

Its not necessarily a bad thing.Whose to say the state could in the past support abunch of big cities.Maybe Atlanta would not be Atlanta?Other states are fine with one major city.Chicago-Illinois,Minneapolis-St.Paul-Minnesota,Birmingham-Alabama,Albuquerque-NewMexico.So many more.We could be like New Jersey, most of their major cities in ruins.
