I bought a new car several years ago and paid off the loan. For some reason I lost my title. If I apply a duplicate title in GA, I have to fill out current mileage and later if I sell the car, the buyer may question my title after seeing the mileage.

Can I just get a duplicate/exact copy of the original title in GA? Is the date/mileage filled out in applying duplicate title is the information to be kept at DMV internally and not shown up in duplicate title?

Because I have never done this before any input from you will be appreciated. I wish the duplicate should be the same as the original. Will they mark "this is a duplicate title" in the duplicate?

BTW, if the original title is in our names, do we need to provlide lien/security satisfaction form? Are all joint owners need to appear in person at County Tag Office?

Thank you in advance.

Why not just call the source and get all your questions answered authoritatively? The link below is for the GA Dept of Revenue with a FAQ on vehicle titles.

Thanks. The thing is I read all of this but none can tell me if the final title will be the same (issue date, mileage, etc.) as the original one. If not and would cause confusion, I'd rather to dig into my home and spend more time to find out. If they are the same, I don't want to spend more time searching my home...

If you get duplicate title before in GA, appreciate if you can tell if they are the same regarding issue date and mileage. Thanks...

What's the difference? You can't change what the state gives you and it's legal, so why the concern? Who cares what the mileage or the date of issue is, provided when you go to sell the vehicle you've stated the miles correctly and aren't trying to roll back the odometer or anything else illegal.

go to your local tag office. you will have to complete a title application for a duplicate. the current mileage will be entered. all owners will have to sign the application. you will need a lien release else the title will appear with the lien holder on it.

you can do this in Atlanta and get same day service for a fee. however, turn around time is quick thru your local tag office.

you can call 706-613-3130 which is the ACC Tag Office in Athens, Ga and they are usually quite helpful and polite.

rules change all the time so my info might be a bit dated.

good luck.

i think it will read " this is a duplicate title and may be subject to the information on the original" which is not really a bad thing unless someone is trying to hide something. i would do all i could to find the original.
